The name of the vessel, Tokiwamaru, was announced on April 24, 2013, through a public call for entries. It was named after the image of a toki, a Japanese crested ibis, soaring over the calm sea, inspired by the desire for eternal safe navigation and comfort and relaxation onboard. The hull has a six-story structure, with the wheelhouse and crew quarters on the top 6th floor, the passenger and crew compartments on the 5th and 4th floors, the passenger compartments on the 3rd floor, and the vehicle loading compartments on the 1st and 2nd floors.
